Stifling temperatures in Bangladesh’s garment factories can be reduced with affordable passive measures, according to new research.

The report, Six seasons, four summers, highlights severe heat stress in the factories, with indoor temperatures exceeding outdoor levels by up to 2°C.

Improved ventilation, insulation, zone partitioning and energy efficiency improvements can pay for themselves within four years, according to the research jointly carried out by Cornell University’s Global Labor Institute and YGEN Engineering.

The research says lower working temperatures will boost productivity in the factories, helping to pay for the improvements.
