The latest phase of work saw 2,730 panels fitted across five roofs, including the main market hall and four ancillary buildings. The installation is expected to generate about 1.27GWh of electricity a year, enough to supply roughly 470 homes, while avoiding around 225 tonnes of carbon emissions annually.

Mark Wheatley, chairman of the City of London Corporation Markets Board, said New Spitalfields Market is “a vital part of London’s fresh produce supply chain”. He added that the investment would help keep the site “a modern, efficient and well-equipped facility”, supporting traders and customers and strengthening its long-term future.

The project sits within the corporation’s Climate Action Strategy, adopted in 2020, which targets net zero in its own operations by 2027 and across its wider value chain by 2040.

The authority has set aside £68 million to support the programme, including £15 million for climate resilience work, and says it has already cut emissions from its own operations by 60% from the 2018-19 baseline, alongside a 28% reduction across its value chain. Its corporate plan for 2024-29 also highlights a 31% fall in annual carbon emissions and a 21% drop in energy use between 2018-19 and 2021-22.
