CIBSE’s technical expertise is one of the Institution’s greatest strengths. It underpins the guidance we produce, the advice we give to government, regulators and industry, and provides the confidence our members and wider stakeholders place in our work.
To ensure that expertise continues to shape the future of the built environment, the CIBSE Board has approved a new name for the Technology Committee, to the Technical Policy Committee, reflecting the Committee’s remit in overseeing both CIBSE’s technical activity and its increasingly important policy and advocacy work.
The Board has also approved updated terms of reference, providing greater clarity on the Committee’s responsibilities. These include overseeing policy development, reviewing consultation responses, supporting external technical engagement, and ensuring CIBSE’s outputs remain evidence-based, authoritative and aligned with the needs of the profession.
These changes better reflect the breadth of our work and recognise CIBSE’s growing role in influencing the policies, standards and technical guidance that shape our industry.
But a Committee is only as strong as the network behind it. We’re keen to hear from members, including those already supporting CIBSE’s Groups, Regions and Societies, who want to help shape the Institution’s technical policy outputs. We are working to establish dedicated representatives in each specialist group, which will help ensure the content we produce is informed by first-class evidence and insights, directly from the specialists working in these areas.
Working closely with CIBSE’s Technical Team, the Committee helps ensure CIBSE remains fit for the future, supporting the President’s theme of ‘futureproofing through resilience’. Our profession has a vital role to play in tackling the major challenges facing the built environment, and the Committee exists to ensure CIBSE’s technical expertise informs those debates with authority and credibility. Ultimately, this is about giving our members a stronger voice in shaping the future of CIBSE and our sector – and I’m pleased our new name now better reflects that ambition.
