The Society of Light and Lighting (SLL) welcomed its new president, Carolina Florian Valbuena, at its AGM in May. She succeeds Kristina Allison in the post for 2026-27.
In her presidential address, Valbuena set out her theme for the year: Making lighting more thoughtful, purposeful and impactful.
She said her presidency would be global in reach, grounded in people, and persistent about why SLL members’ work matters. Her focus will be on raising the profile of the profession among the audiences that most need to recognise its value, while strengthening the SLL’s presence beyond its traditional centres.
A number of awards were also presented at the SLL AGM:
- Regional Award: Ross Munro MSLL, regional lighting representative for Scotland
- Lighting Award: Helen Loomes FSLL
- Honorary Fellowship: Nigel Harvey and Suzanne Castine
- President’s Medal: John Aston FSLL
- Leon Gaster Award: Cosmin Ticleanu, Lorna Flores-Villa, Paul Littlefair and Gareth Howlett for the paper Assessing melanopic equivalent daylight illuminance in office spaces using a simplified approach for predominantly cloudy climates.
- Walsh Weston Award: Christophe Martinsons and Nicolas Picard, for the paper Untangling light in noisy luminous environments.
