The value of volunteering at CIBSE

To mark Volunteer Week from 1- 7 June, Jennifer Cox and Max McCone tell CIBSE’s head of Networks and engagement, Kathryn King, about the benefits of sharing knowledge and expertise

Much like the CIBSE membership, the CIBSE volunteer community spans the globe. We consider ourselves to be incredibly fortunate to be supported by such a dedicated and knowledgeable team of volunteers, who help to shape our work and contribute at every level.

Volunteering is described as an active, deliberate pursuit – each volunteer chooses an activity they want to do, motivated by the difference they want to make and how this shapes the world in which they want to live in.

Volunteers Week, from 1-7 June, presents an opportunity to better acknowledge and thank our volunteers’ efforts, shine a spotlight on what they help us to achieve and, hopefully, inspire others to get involved.

We are passionate about ensuring development pathways throughout an individual’s volunteer journey and demonstrating the many opportunities available. The experiences of two volunteers are featured below.

Jennifer Cox, senior electrical engineer at Cundall (pictured above)
Current roles: Technology committee, Council elected member, Electrical Services Group honorary treasurer, contributor to publications

After attending a few Young Engineers Network events, I started volunteering to get a better understanding of the industry and meet other engineers. This quickly turned into wanting to help and better represent those early in their career in the industry, including supporting women in engineering.

Max McCone MCIBSE, senior mechanical engineer, Mott MacDonald

Current roles: YEN Global committee chair, AI Working Group, CIBSE Council elected member

I wanted to join a community of fellow building services engineers and learn as much as possible. Joining CIBSE has given me that and added so much to my experience, as people have been so quick to give me support.

I now volunteer to try to get more people into our incredible industry, as well as to contribute as much as I can.
