Rolls‑Royce has signed a contract with Great British Energy – Nuclear for the UK’s first small modular reactors (SMRs).

The deal between Rolls-Royce’s SMR arm and the government’s state-owned nuclear company will enable technology design activities to start on the mini-reactors, which are due to be deployed on Ynys Môn (Isle of Anglesey), in North Wales.

The National Wealth Fund has committed up to £599m to support Rolls-Royce’s SMR development activities, on top of £2.6bn announced by the Chancellor, Rachel Reeves, in last year’s Spending Review.
