The UAE is the latest region to have its own CIBSE TM65 embodied carbon guide. TM65 is used to calculate the impacts of embodied carbon in building services systems, and since its launch in 2021 there have been additional versions for Australia and North America (covered in more detail in this month’s CPD). There are also TM65 guides for lighting and residential heating, and Amazon contributed to a guide for logistics centres. More transparency around the impact of products and materials will be key to designers meeting the Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard, which includes building limits for embodied carbon. The lighting industry has been quick to address the challenge of reducing embodied carbon, a key topic at Build2Perform Live this year. Notably, lighting company Whitecroft was the winner of the CIBSE Embodied Carbon Award, positioning the sector as a clear leader in the field.
